Marileidy Paulino: Dominican Track and Field Star
Early Life and Athletics JourneyMarileidy Paulino was born on October 25, 1996, in Nizao, Dominican Republic. Despite her family's humble background, she pursued her passion for sports from a young age. Paulino initially played volleyball and handball before embracing track and field. She initially trained barefoot due to financial constraints.
Early Competitions and Rise
In 2015, Paulino made her mark at the III Dominican Republic Youth Games, winning a silver medal in the 100m with a time of 12.70. At the 2016 NACAC U23 Championships, she placed fifth in the 100m and sixth in the 200m. In 2017, she competed in the Summer Universiade in Taipei, finishing 13th in the 200m and 11th in the semifinals.
International Success
2019 proved to be a pivotal year for Paulino. She competed at the World Championships but failed to qualify for the finals. However, at the World Military Games, she won two silver medals (200m and mixed 4x400m relay) and two bronze medals (100m and 4x100m relay).
Tokyo Olympics 2020: Historic Medals
In 2021, Paulino reached the pinnacle of her career at the Tokyo Olympics. She became the first Dominican woman to win multiple medals at the Olympic Games, earning silver in the 400m (49.20) and mixed 4x400m relay (3:10.21). Paulino's historic achievement was marked by the phrase "God is my hope, Amen" inscribed on her sneakers.
Education and Military Career
In addition to her athletic endeavors, Paulino is pursuing a degree in physical education at the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo. She holds the rank of corporal in the Dominican Air Force.
