Such was the case with British teacher Ray Co, who donated his own kidney to one of his students.
Aliya's Struggle
Thirteen-year-old London schoolgirl Aliya Ahmed Ali suffered from kidney failure and had little hope of survival. The only way to help her was through a kidney transplant, but finding a suitable donor seemed impossible. Aliya also suffered from hydrocephalus, a condition where excess fluid accumulates in the brain, making her education a challenging task. Unfortunately, her condition did not improve her chances of finding a kidney donor.
A Selfless Offer
Ray Co learned about his student's illness from her mother, who informed him that Aliya would be absent from school for some time. While Aliya's mother understood the importance of education, she knew that kidney dialysis was a more urgent matter. This news shocked Mr. Co, but as a responsible educator, he offered his help. Instead of simply providing moral support or some financial compensation, Ray Co made an unexpectedly heroic decision – he decided to include himself as a potential kidney donor.
A Calculated Sacrifice
Ray Co was fully aware of the gravity of the situation and knew that donating a kidney would significantly change his life. However, he did not make this decision impulsively or without careful consideration. Realizing the magnitude of the task at hand, he proceeded with a clear mind and rational thinking. Ray Co went beyond what was expected of a school teacher, driven by his belief that he was born for such a task – a sentiment inspired by a biblical verse that kept resonating in his mind.
A Lifesaving Gift
The news of unexpected help from her teacher brought immense joy to Aliya's life. It was a reward that Ray Co never expected. However, joy was premature, as the medical team needed to determine if the gift would be suitable for Aliya. Tests confirmed that Ray Co, who was not related to Aliya, was indeed a perfect match. The successful kidney transplant took place in a London hospital in February. Currently, both Aliya and Ray Co are recovering from the operation, and after the Easter break, they are expected to return to school.
A Lifelong Gratitude
Aliya's parents understand that they can never fully repay Ray Co for his selfless act. He truly became a part of their family, not only spiritually but also on a physical level. Aliya's father, Ahmed Ali, expressed his gratitude, stating that Ray Co gave his daughter more than just life. Words and actions can never fully describe their appreciation.
An Extraordinary Teacher
Wendy Bower, a representative of the school, commented on the situation, stating that Ray Co's act far exceeded the typical duty of a teacher. His nobility and selflessness were well-known among his colleagues, but no one expected such a heroic deed from him.
