Eddie Aikau: A Hawaiian Lifesaver and Surfer

Eddie Aikau was a legendary figure in the world of surfing and lifesaving. Known for his fearlessness and ability to conquer the highest waves, Aikau was a hero both for his own enjoyment of the sport and for his dedication to saving lives. Born in Kahului, Maui, he grew up in a family of surfers and quickly developed a passion for the sport.

Becoming a Lifesaver

At the age of 16, Aikau started working at a local cannery to earn money for his first surfboard. In 1968, he found a job that suited him better - he was hired as a lifeguard by the local government. Aikau became the first lifeguard for the region, overseeing a large area but handling his responsibilities with ease. During his time as a lifeguard, not a single person drowned on the beaches under his watchful eye. Aikau fearlessly faced the treacherous waves, saving potential drowning victims without hesitation.

The Voyage and Tragedy

In 1978, the Polynesian Voyaging Society announced a 30-day voyage along ancient Polynesian migration routes. Aikau, then 31 years old, was selected as one of the crew members. Unfortunately, the voyage encountered a leak in one of the ship's hulls, about 19 kilometers south of Molokai Island. Aikau made the fateful decision to paddle on his surfboard for help. Tragically, he was never seen again.

Legacy

Aikau's name remains synonymous with courage and heroism in the surfing world. Every year, the company Quiksilver hosts the Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational in Waimea Bay in his honor. The competition, which started in 1985, attracts 28 surfers from around the world. However, it is a rare event due to the strict requirement of waves reaching a minimum height of 10 meters. Aikau's legacy lives on, inspiring surfers and reminding them to face their fears head-on.
