Early Life and Career
Kelly Slater was born on February 11, 1972, in Cocoa Beach, Florida, where he still resides today. From a young age, Slater became passionate about surfing and quickly achieved success. He has credited his parents for instilling in him a love for the sea, as they wanted to live near the open ocean. Despite traveling to the best beaches around the world, Slater considers the beach near his home as his favorite surfing spot. It was there that he first dreamed of becoming a professional surfer and learned all the skills that would later make him a champion. Professional Career
Despite the noticeable differences between the surfing of Slater's time and the present, he attempted to incorporate more skateboarding tricks into the sport to make it more exciting and visually appealing. At the age of 20, he became the world champion, declaring that he would likely never experience a better feeling. Little did he know that he would go on to become the world champion ten more times, in 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2010, and 2011. Throughout most of his career, Slater collaborated with the giant brand "Quiksilver," earning millions of dollars from their partnership. He served as the face of the brand and was one of the main surfers on their team. In 2014, Slater decided to end his collaboration with "Quiksilver" and signed a contract with the brand "Kering."
Other Ventures
Over the course of his career, Slater appeared in more than 35 films, ranging from full-length features to short films and documentaries. He also made appearances on two television shows, "The Girls Next Door" and "Baywatch." Slater has written two books, "Pipe Dreams: A Surfer's Journey" and "Kelly Slater: For the Love," released in 2003 and 2008, respectively.
