Early Life and Career
South African racing driver, Jody Scheckter, emerged from the competitive motorsport scene of his home country. In the late 1960s, he competed in saloon car races in South Africa. In 1971, he transitioned to Formula Ford and also took part in sportscar races driving a Lola T212.
Formula 5000 Success
In 1972, Scheckter acquired a Surtees Formula 5000 car and became the South African Formula 5000 champion. His success in this formula caught the attention of Formula 1 teams.
Formula 1 Debut
Scheckter made his Formula 1 debut in the 1972 South African Grand Prix, driving for a local team. He competed in the race three times over the years, finishing outside of the points on each occasion.
Touring Car Championship
After leaving Formula 1, Scheckter returned to South Africa and competed in the Touring Car Championship. He emerged as the champion in both 1977 and 1978.
Retirement and Business
Scheckter later retired from racing and transitioned into business. He successfully pursued various entrepreneurial ventures, establishing himself as a respected businessman.
