Edgar Álvarez: Honduran Football Legend
Early Career and Rise to ProminenceEdgar Álvarez, a Honduran footballer, began his career as a right midfielder for the club Deportivo Platense. In 1996, he was invited to join the first team by the manager, Alberto Domingo Romero. Álvarez spent seven years with Platense, winning the Honduran championship in 2000.
International Success and European Adventures
In 2003, Álvarez moved to Uruguayan club Peñarol and won the Uruguayan championship. He was then loaned to Italian club Cagliari in 2004 as a replacement for François Modesto after his move to Monaco. Álvarez's friend, David Suazo, played a role in facilitating his transfer, advising Cagliari's president, Massimo Cellino.
Stints with Roma, Messina, and Livorno
In the summer of 2005, Álvarez was loaned to Roma, who later purchased his contract for 1.2 million euros and signed him for four years. In 2006, he was loaned to Messina for 300,000 euros with an option to purchase half of his transfer fee. However, Álvarez failed to prevent Messina from being relegated to Serie B.
Álvarez returned to Roma in 2007 but was released on loan to Livorno, which also suffered relegation to Serie B. He only made eight appearances for the club, mostly as a substitute.
Serie B Adventure and Return to Platense
In 2008, Álvarez was loaned to Pisa in Serie B for a season. In 2009, he was purchased by Bari but could only join the team on July 10 due to a political crisis in Honduras. Álvarez made 37 appearances and scored three goals in his debut season for Bari.
Career Highlights
On February 25, 2007, while playing for Messina, Álvarez scored a winning goal in the second minute of added time against Siena. Tragically, a 60-year-old Messina fan celebrating the goal died of a heart attack.
In total, Álvarez played 54 matches for the Honduran national team, scoring three goals. He represented his country at the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
