Edgar Cahn: American Legal Luminary and Social Activist
Early Life and EducationEdgar Cahn was born into a family of legal professionals and excelled academically from an early age. He graduated summa cum laude from Swarthmore College (1956), Yale University (1960), and Yale Law School (1963). Additionally, he studied at the University of Cambridge in 1958.
Academic and Legal Career
Cahn's legal education culminated in a Juris Doctor (JD) from Yale Law School (1960) and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree. He became an Emeritus Professor and a Fellow at the London School of Economics. He also held research fellowships at Florida International University and Columbia University's Center for the Study of Human Rights.
Advocacy and Accolades
Cahn dedicated his career to fighting poverty and advocating for the rights of minorities in the United States. He worked on civil rights issues under Presidents Kennedy and Johnson and was awarded the Jefferson Award for Outstanding Public Service, the Robert Hunter Award for Outstanding Contribution to Legal Education, and the Chief Justice's Award from the New York State Bar, among other honors.

Cahn's invention of Time-Dollars, an alternative currency that measures time and skills, has become a foundational concept for improving social welfare and promoting social justice. It empowers recipients of services to become active participants in creating positive change in their communities.
Time-Dollars Institute
Cahn established the Time-Dollars Institute in Washington, D.C. in 1995. The organization provides support and resources for community revitalization and empowerment projects using the Time-Dollar model.
