Ludwig Harscher von Almendingen
Ludwig Harscher von Almendingen was born on March 25, 1766, in Paris, where his father served as the Hessian-Darmstadt envoy.
Education and Early Career
From 1789 to 1792, Almendingen studied law at the University of Göttingen in Germany. In 1794, he was appointed Professor of Jurisprudence at Herborn University. He quickly gained recognition for his literary works, particularly in the areas of criminal law reform.
State Service
In 1803, Almendingen was appointed Councilor to the Higher Appellate Court in Hadamar. In 1811, he was promoted to Privy Councilor and Vice-Director of the Higher Court in Wiesbaden.
Political Advocacy
After the dissolution of the Rhine Union, Almendingen published an unfinished work titled "Polit. Ansichten Über Deutschlands Vergangenheit, Gegenwart und Zukunft" defending the position of the small states of the Rhine Union.
Legal Controversy and Imprisonment
In 1816, Almendingen was appointed Vice-President of the Higher Court in Dillenburg. A dispute between the senior and junior lines of the Anhalt-Bernburg family led to him being tried and sentenced to one year in prison for criticizing Prussian legislation.
Retirement and Death
Following his imprisonment, Almendingen's health declined, and he was forced to retire. He died on January 16, 1827, in Dillenburg.
