Early Life and Military Career
Ervin Lahousen, the son of a high-ranking Austro-Hungarian officer from northern Germany, was born into a military legacy. In 1913, he enrolled in the prestigious Theresian Military Academy. Despite being only 18 years old, he was commissioned as a lieutenant in 1915 and served in the infantry during World War I, earning two wounds in Italy.
Rise in Austrian Intelligence
After the war, Lahousen continued his military career, culminating in his appointment as deputy head of Austrian military intelligence in 1935. He played a pivotal role in its development and operations.
Service in the Third Reich
Following Austria's annexation by Nazi Germany in 1938, Lahousen and his intelligence unit were transferred to the Abwehr, Germany's military intelligence agency. He served as deputy head of the Abwehr's Intelligence Department, rising to command of the 2nd Department for sabotage and diversion. He also led the Brandenburg Division and commanded the 41st Grenadier Regiment on the Eastern Front.
Post-War Career and Legacy
In December 1944, Lahousen became head of the Intelligence Bureau in Vienna. After Germany's defeat in 1945, he was captured by the Americans and subjected to mistreatment. However, he later cooperated with their intelligence services and testified at the Nuremberg trials, leading to his release. Lahousen returned to Austria, where he lived until his death.
