Early Life and Education
Édouard Dapples, a Swiss liberal politician, was born in Lausanne in 1807. In his early years, he pursued theological and philosophical studies at the University of Lausanne from 1825 to 1831 but did not graduate. Subsequently, he studied forestry in Bayreuth, Germany.
Forestry and Public Service
Dapples' career in forestry commenced in 1833 when he was appointed as a district ranger in Coppet. He later served as a ranger in Lausanne from 1840 to 1842 and as a forest inspector from 1848 to 1851. Concurrent with his forestry responsibilities, Dapples actively engaged in local politics.
Municipal Leadership
In 1834, Dapples was elected to the Lausanne City Council, where he served until 1842 and again from 1848 to 1857. He rose to the position of Mayor of Lausanne, serving two terms from 1843 to 1848 and 1857 to 1867.
Cantonal and National Politics
Dapples also played a prominent role in cantonal and national politics. He was elected to the Grand Council of Vaud (the cantonal parliament) in 1848 and served until 1868, interrupted only by a brief hiatus. At the national level, he was a member of the Swiss National Council from 1851 to 1854 and again from 1857 to 1866. He notably presided over the National Council in 1860.
Diplomatic Mission
In 1860, Dapples was dispatched as an extraordinary ambassador to Berlin and St. Petersburg. This diplomatic mission marked a significant moment in his political career.
Personal Life
Dapples was married twice. His first wife, Hilda d'Ober, was the illegitimate daughter of Grand Duchess Anna Feodorovna and Rudolf Abraham de Schieferli. His second wife, Marie Suzanne Elisabeth Courchaud, married him in 1840.
Legacy
Édouard Dapples made significant contributions to the development of Lausanne during his lifetime. He is remembered for his strong leadership and dedication to the city's well-being. In recognition of his contributions, an avenue in Lausanne bears his name – Avenue Edouard-Dapples.
