Early Life and Training

Ludwig Burgerwas born in Leipzig and apprenticed as a wood engraver under Friedrich Unzelmann.

Career in Berlin

Burger gained prominence in Berlin for his exceptional woodcuts illustrating Adolf Menzel's "History of Frederick the Great" (1839-1842). He also engraved portraits of prominent figures from the era of this Prussian monarch.

Contributions to "Illustrirte Zeitung"

From 1846 onwards, Burger's numerous woodcuts appeared in J. J. Weber's "Illustrirte Zeitung." These works depicted various subjects, including historical events and scenes of nature.
