Early Life and Education
Born into a Prussian family, Ewald Friedrich Hermann Grüneisen pursued his education at two prestigious universities: Halle and Berlin. He earned his doctorate in philosophy in 1900.
Career at the Physicotechnical Institute
After his doctoral studies, Grüneisen worked as an assistant to Friedrich Kohlrausch at the Physicotechnical Institute in Berlin-Charlottenburg. He was promoted to Laboratory Director in 1911 and became Head of the Department in 1919.
Professorship at Marburg University
In 1927, Grüneisen received a professorship at Marburg University. He also took on the role of Director of the Physics Institute.
Research Contributions
Grüneisen's Law (1908)Grüneisen established that the ratio of a metal's coefficient of thermal expansion to its specific heat capacity is independent of temperature.
Grüneisen's Formula (1911)
He derived a formula connecting the oscillation frequency of atoms in a crystal lattice to the crystal's elastic constants.
Bloch-Grüneisen Formula
Grüneisen contributed to the Bloch-Grüneisen formula, which describes the temperature dependence of the ideal part of a metal's electrical resistivity.
Contribution to Solid-State Theory
Grüneisen is widely recognized as one of the pioneers of solid-state theory. His groundbreaking work in 1919 laid the foundation for a comprehensive theory of the crystalline state.
