Early Life and Education
Edward de Bono was born in Malta and attended St. Edward's College before pursuing medicine at the University of Malta.
Academic Career
de Bono continued his education at Christ Church College, University of Oxford, where he earned bachelor's and doctoral degrees in medicine, as well as honorary doctorates in psychology and physiology. He also holds a doctorate from the University of Cambridge and a doctorate in clinical medicine from the University of Malta.
Professorial Roles
de Bono held faculty positions at Oxford, Cambridge, the University of London, and Harvard University.
Lateral Thinking and Creativity
de Bono's significant contribution was his demonstration that creativity is an essential characteristic of self-organizing information systems. His 1969 book, "The Mechanism of Mind," explored how the brain's neural networks form asymmetrical patterns that underlie perception. According to physicist Murray Gell-Mann, the book anticipated by a decade the fields of mathematics related to chaos theory and nonlinear and self-organizing systems.

Based on his research, de Bono developed the concept and tools of lateral thinking.
