Edward Kolb

Edward Kolb (born October 2, 1951) is an American physicist working in the field of cosmology. He is a co-author of the popular textbook "The Early Universe" and a professor at the University of Chicago.

Education and Early Career

Kolb earned his bachelor's degree in physics from the University of New Orleans in 1973 and his Ph.D. in physics from the University of Texas in 1978. From 1978 to 1980, he worked at the California Institute of Technology.

Time at Los Alamos and Fermilab

From 1980 to 1983, Kolb worked at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, leading the theoretical astrophysics group. In 1983, he joined Fermilab, where he led the theoretical astrophysics group until 2001. From 2001 to 2006, he served as the director of the Center for Elementary Particle Astrophysics at Fermilab.

Research in Cosmology

Kolb's research focuses on applying particle physics to cosmology and astrophysics. He has conducted theoretical investigations into the early stages of the expanding universe, dark matter, baryogenesis, axions, and other topics.

Educational Outreach

In addition to his research, Kolb is an active educator. He gives public lectures on cosmology and has written popular books on the subject. He is a fellow of the American Physical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
