Frederic E. Wakeman Jr.
Early Life and EducationFrederic E. Wakeman Jr. was an American historian renowned for his contributions to the study of Chinese Ming history. Born in San Diego, California, he pursued his higher education at Harvard University, graduating with a B.A. in 1961. In 1971, he received his PhD with a dissertation on "The Great Enterprise of Zhu Yuanzhang."
Academic Career
Wakeman spent the majority of his career at the University of Miami, where he held the position of Professor of History. He was a leading authority on early Ming history, particularly the expeditions of the renowned explorer Zheng He.
Research and Publications
Wakeman's scholarship focused on the early years of the Ming Dynasty, the establishment of its political and administrative structures, and the role of the Chinese empire in the larger East Asian world. His most influential works include:
