Academic Career

Ivan Bozhilov graduated from St. Kliment Ohridski University of Sofia in 1965. He pursued postgraduate studies at the Institute of History, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (1968-1970) and defended his PhD thesis on the history of Transdanubian Bulgaria in 1971. Bozhilov underwent research stints in Paris (1973-1974) and at the Centre for Byzantine Studies in Bari (1978-1980).

Research and Publications

Bozhilov has held research positions at the Institute of History, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, serving as a Scientific Researcher (1971), Senior Scientific Researcher I (1982), and Senior Scientific Researcher II (1988). In 1986, he obtained his doctoral degree with a thesis on the Asen dynasty. Bozhilov is the author of over 140 scientific publications, including 8 monographs and 4 co-authored works. He has served as editor-in-chief for the publications "Byzantino-Bulgarica," "Greek Sources on Bulgarian History," and "Latin Sources on Bulgarian History."

Academic Leadership and Honors

Since 1982, Bozhilov has headed the Medieval History of Bulgaria section at the Institute of History. He has also been appointed as Academic Secretary of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (1992), Chairman of the National Committee of Historians of Bulgaria (1995), and Chairman of the History Commission at the Higher Attestation Commission. Bozhilov has taught various courses at the university level, including medieval Bulgarian history and culture, Byzantine history and culture, and the European North and the Mediterranean in the Middle Ages.
