Early Life and Classical Training
Egberto Gismonti is a renowned instrumentalist and composer who began his musical journey at the tender age of six, mastering the piano. His passion for music led him to study in Paris during the 1960s, where he immersed himself in the teachings of Nadia Boulanger (orchestration and musical analysis) and Barraque (composition).
Return to Brazil and Choro Influence
Upon his return to Brazil in 1966, Gismonti's interest shifted towards choro, a genre he perceived as Brazil's answer to funky music. His compositions seamlessly blended Afro-Brazilian rhythms with jazz. He transitioned from piano to guitar, initially influenced by the styles of Baden Powell and Denо.
Expansion of Guitar Technique
In the early 1970s, Gismonti's guitar playing evolved under the influence of Django Reinhardt and Jimi Hendrix. In 1973, he adopted the 8-string guitar, offering greater chord-building possibilities and a more flexible bassline. His pursuit of new sonic textures led him to the 10-string guitar with additional bass strings in 1981. Gismonti's performances on both piano and guitar exude an intoxicating blend of melodies and improvisations.
International Collaborations and Film Scores
Gismonti's tours of the United States alongside Airto Moreira and Flora Purim (1976) and Nana Vasconcelos (1976-1979) brought his music to international audiences. His intricate compositional style and evocative performances have graced over 11 films.
ECM Label and Carmo Records
Gismonti has enjoyed longstanding collaborations with ECM-affiliated musicians such as Jan Garbarek, Collin Walcott, Ralph Towner, and Charlie Haden. He founded his own record label, Carmo, which has released numerous albums in partnership with ECM.
