Biography of František Xaver Dussek
František Xaver Dussek was a renowned Czech composer, known for his contributions to the music scene in his homeland rather than abroad. He was known for his collection of piano pieces, primarily variations, sonatas, and concertos. Additionally, he composed chamber music, symphonies, and songs, although this aspect of his work is often less recognized. Dussek's music is heavily influenced by Czech folk songwriting.
Early Life and Education
František was born into a poor peasant family as the third of seven children. His youth was undoubtedly challenging. The Dussek family lived and worked on the Horschitz lands, belonging to Count Karl von Sporck. Thanks to the financial support of this aristocrat, František was able to receive an education, including basic musical training as a choir singer in the Jesuit college in the town of Hradec Králové. However, shortly before graduation, Dussek suffered a severe leg injury, forcing him to leave the institution. Yet, this injury allowed him to pursue his true passion for music, a talent he had always felt a deep affinity towards.
At the age of 16, František (again with the support of Count von Sporck) traveled to Prague to study "musical composition" and organ playing under the guidance of F. V. Gabermann. He then spent three years in Vienna studying with G. K. Vanhal, a court composer, renowned music educator, and exceptional pianist. During this time, Dussek had the opportunity to meet Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
Professional Career and Personal Life
František spent more than three years in Vienna, primarily working as a church organist. By the age of 40, he had returned to Prague and began teaching piano. Among his students were notable figures such as J. Vításek, L. Koželuh, and V. Mášek.
At the age of 45, Dussek married Josephine Gampacherová, the daughter of a pharmacist who owned valuable property in Prague: the "White Unicorn" pharmacy located in the heart of the city's Old Town Square. Josephine later gained recognition as a singer. The Dussek residence became a gathering place for Prague's creative society, with prominent figures such as Karel Ferdinand Klamm-Gallas visiting. Dussek composed the majority of his works for Klamm-Gallas' chapel.
František not only owned property in Prague but also had a summer residence in Bertramka. It was here that Mozart stayed as a guest for an extended period, during which he composed a significant portion of the opera "Don Giovanni" and the opera "Titus' Mercy." Dussek passed away in Prague at the age of 68, remembered as a celebrated composer and musician.
Dussek is particularly valued by the Czech people for his dedication to creating music in his homeland rather than seeking success abroad.
