Biography of Egidio Romualdo Duni
Early Life and EducationEgidio Romualdo Duni, an Italian composer, was born in 1708 in Matera, Italy. His father, Francesco Duni, was his first music teacher, and he also taught music to Egidio's two sisters. At the age of 9, Egidio was admitted to the Conservatorio di Santa Maria di Loreto, a music conservatory near Naples, where he studied alongside renowned Italian musicians Giovanni Battista Pergolesi, Giovanni Paisiello, and Leonardo Vinci.
Early Works and Success
In 1735, Duni's first opera, "Nerone," was premiered in Rome and received warm acclaim from the audience. Over the next few years, he created several more operas that were staged in various Italian cities, including "Adriano in Siria" (1735-1736), "Giuseppe riconosciuto" (1736), and "La tirannide debellata" (1736). In 1737, his opera "Demofoonte" was performed in London.
Parisian Period and National French Comic Opera
In 1749, Duni moved to Parma, where he composed his first comic opera, "La buona figliuola." In 1755, he created the opera "Ninette à la cour," which was later staged in Paris in 1757. Duni decided to stay in Paris, and despite his Italian origin, he was recognized as one of the creators of the national French comic opera. In Paris, Duni departed from the historical and mythological themes of his previous works and turned to simple stories about peasants, maids, and artisans.
Works and Legacy
During his time in Paris, Duni composed around 20 operas, including notable works such as "Le peintre amoureux de son modèle," "La fée Urgèle, Fontainebleau," and "L'école de la jeunesse." Additionally, he created over 15 opera productions for the Italian stage. Duni's operas were expressive yet light, with realistic and lively characters that resonated with the audience. He skillfully blended the best elements of Italian opera buffa and French comic opera.
Apart from operas, Duni also composed oratorios and works in other genres. He passed away on June 11, 1775, in Paris, leaving behind a significant contribution to the development of national comic opera in France.
