Early Life and Education

Karl Köhler was born in Saxony, Germany. His archaeological interests led him to pursue a career in the field.

Career at the Imperial Public Library and Hermitage

In 1797, Köhler joined the Imperial Public Library in Saint Petersburg. Subsequently, he worked at the Hermitage Library and became its director. As curator of the Cabinet of Coins and Medals, he was instrumental in expanding the collection. Additionally, he was elected as an ordinary academician of the Academy of Sciences.

Numismatic and Archaeological Publications

Köhler's expertise in antiquities, particularly in coins and gems, was evident in his numerous publications. His monographs on archaeological subjects appeared in the Academy's proceedings and as separate brochures. The Academy posthumously published his collected works as "Köhlers Schriften" from 1850 to 1853, edited by Stefan.

Legacy: The Köhler Collection

Köhler dedicated considerable effort to creating a collection of sulfur casts of Greek and Roman coins. This extensive assembly (over 10,000 pieces) surpassed the renowned collection of Millin de Grandmaison. Count Sergei Grigorievich Stroganov acquired the Köhler collection for the Numismatic Cabinet of Moscow University, where it remains a valuable research resource.
