Early Life and Education
Egön Orowan was born in the Óbuda district of Budapest, Hungary. His father, Berthold, was a mechanical engineer and factory manager, while his mother, Jose Spitzer Szágvári, was the daughter of an impoverished landowner.
In 1928, Orowan began studying mechanical engineering and electrical engineering at the Technical University of Berlin. However, he soon transferred to the physics department and completed his doctoral thesis on cracks in mica in 1932.
Struggles and Research
After graduating, Orowan faced difficulties finding a job in his field. He spent the next few years living with his mother and continued working on his doctoral research. His perseverance and dedication paid off when he eventually secured a position.
