Gotfried von Einem: A Life in Music
Early Life and EducationBorn in Bern, Switzerland on January 24, 1918, Gotfried von Einem was the second of three sons of Austrian diplomat William von Einem. Despite his affluent upbringing, Einem's childhood was marked by parental absence due to their frequent travels.
Completing his secondary education in 1937, Einem moved to Berlin to study under renowned composer Boris Blacher. He subsequently worked as a répétiteur with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra.
Marriage and Career Beginnings
Through Blacher's influence, Einem met his first wife, Lianne von Bismarck, whom he married in 1946. They had a son, Caspar, in Salzburg two years later. In 1953, the family relocated to Vienna.
Composing Success
Einem's opera, "Dantons Tod," premiered at the Salzburg Festival in 1947, propelling him to international fame. Heavily influenced by Stravinsky, Prokofiev, and jazz, his operas delved into unconventional dramatic themes.
Personal Life and Inspiration
In 1962, Einem married the renowned Austrian writer and playwright Lotte Ingrisch, who provided librettos for many of his later operas. They spent much time in the Waldviertel region of Lower Austria, finding inspiration in its unspoiled landscapes.
Teaching Career
From 1965, Einem taught composition at the Vienna Academy of Music and Performing Arts.
Legacy
Gotfried von Einem died on July 12, 1996, in Oberdürnbach, Lower Austria. Known for his prolific output of operas, his works continue to be performed and studied worldwide.
