Raninen Ossi: Finnish Red Army Commander
Early Life and EducationRaninen Ossi was born on April 15, 1901, in Finland to a working-class family. Despite limited formal education (three classes of Finnish gymnasium), he completed Finnish command courses in Petrograd and the International Military School in Petrograd.
Military Career
From May 4, 1919, Ossi served as Assistant Company Commander in the Red Army (RKK A). In September 1919, he became Platoon Commander in the 2nd Company of the International Military School.
Civil War Service
Ossi actively participated in the Russian Civil War on the Red Army's side, fighting on the Ural, Murmansk, and Karelian fronts. He was a member of Тойvo Antikaine n's detachment and sustained four wounds during combat.
Commander of the Ukhta Special Purpose Company
On February 13, 1923, Ossi was appointed Commander of the Ukhta Company of special purpose units. His bravery and leadership earned him the Order of the Red Banner for his role in the Battle of Baryshnavolok on January 27, 1922. He also played a pivotal part in the offensive on Kostomuksha in February 1922.
Wounding and Death
In April 1923, Ossi was wounded while apprehending a suspicious Finnish border-crosser in Ukhta. The Karelian Labor Commune issued an order on July 6, 1923, removing Ossi from the CHON and his position due to his fatal wound.
Ossi died on June 18, 1923, and was laid to rest in the Fraternal Grave in Petrozavodsk.
