Early Life and Education

Ekaterina Nikolaevna Alekseeva was born in Moscow in 1906. She began her musical education at an early age, studying singing and piano. In 1926, she graduated from the vocal faculty of the State Institute of Theatrical Art. Three years later, she completed her vocal studies at the Moscow Conservatory and joined the Bolshoi Theatre.

Career as a Singer

Alekseeva performed as a soloist at the Bolshoi Theatre from 1929 to 1931. During this time, she sang a wide repertoire of soprano roles. She also participated in numerous concerts, including broadcasts on the radio.

Transition to Musicology

In 1931, Alekseeva left the stage and pursued a career in musicology. She enrolled in the postgraduate program at the Moscow Conservatory, where she specialized in music history. In 1935, she completed her dissertation and graduated with a doctorate.

Director of the Memorial Museum of N. G. Rubinstein

In 1938, Alekseeva became director of the Memorial Museum of N. G. Rubinstein, which was housed at the Moscow Conservatory. Under her leadership, the museum expanded its collection and became a prominent center for the study of Russian music.

The Great Patriotic War and the Museum

During World War II, the museum remained open, continuing its educational and research activities. After the war, it became independent from the Moscow Conservatory and was renamed the State Central Museum of Musical Culture (GMMK).

Expansion of GMMK

Under Alekseeva's directorship, GMMK expanded its collection and activities. It established partnerships with renowned musicians, acquired new archival materials, and organized concerts and lectures. The museum also established several branch museums, including the A. B. Goldenweiser Memorial Museum and the N. S. Golovanov Memorial Museum-Apartment.

Retirement and Legacy

Alekseeva retired from GMMK in 1984 after more than 45 years of service. Her contributions to the field of music history and museology are substantial, and her legacy continues to inspire current museum professionals.

Honors and Awards

Alekseeva's achievements were recognized with numerous awards, including the Order of the October Revolution and the Order of the Red Banner of Labor.
