Early Life and Activism in Romania
Born in Switzerland to Romanian parents, Ana Pauker joined the Social Democratic Party of Romania (SDPR) while studying medicine at the University of Bucharest. In 1903, she participated in organizing the Second Congress of the Socialist International and was elected to the Executive Committee of the SDPR. As an advocate for industrial workers' rights, Pauker campaigned for social protection measures amidst the tuberculosis epidemic.
International Revolutionary Activities
Following the October Revolution in Russia, Pauker joined the Russian Communist Party (Bolsheviks) in 1919. She returned to Romania and played a key role in the Communist Party of Romania (CPR), leading to her arrest and subsequent exile in 1924. Pauker attended the Fifth Congress of the Comintern as a CPR delegate, where she was elected to the Revolutionary Committee of the Moldavian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic.
Return to Romania and Arrest
Pauker returned to Romania in the 1930s and was arrested and sentenced to death by the NKVD in 1937. Despite being rehabilitated posthumously both in Romania and the Soviet Union, her legacy remains a controversial one.
