Early Life and Education
Ekaterina Mtsituridze was born in Tbilisi, Georgia, on January 10, 1972, to a pharmacist father and a geologist mother. Her surname, which translates to "redhead" in Georgian, was bestowed upon her by her father. Inspired by her parents' love for cinema, Katya developed a passion for the film industry at a young age and aspired to become a film critic.
As a diligent student, Katya excelled in her studies. At the age of 19, she began her first steps in journalism, contributing articles to the local magazine "Cinema" and the newspaper "Cinema News." Her television debut came a year later on Georgian television, where she hosted a news program covering arts and culture.
Mtsituridze subsequently pursued a higher education at Tbilisi State University, where she earned degrees in history and cinema studies. She also obtained master's degrees in history, specializing in Italian missionaries of the 17th century, and proficiency in English and Italian, which would later prove invaluable in her professional endeavors.
Journalism and Television Career
In the 1990s, following her parents' divorce, Katya moved to Moscow with her mother. There, she secured her first major job as a freelance editor on ORT (now Channel One) for the television program "Teleutro" (later renamed "Dobroe Utro"). As she has acknowledged in interviews, this opportunity came about through her connections, with a friend assisting in her placement.
Over time, with the approval of channel producer Konstantin Ernst, Mtsituridze became the host of her own segment on the program, titled "Eto Kino." A decade later, she created her eponymous talk show, "Premiere with Viewers," which showcased highly anticipated Russian film releases. Mtsituridze established herself as a renowned Russian film critic and regular jury member at film festivals.
Roskino
In 2011, Mtsituridze took on the most significant role of her career as general director of Roskino, the sole Russian state organization dedicated to developing and promoting domestic film products. Her three years in this position yielded impressive results, including the launch of the joint project "20 Lives" with partners from the United States, initiated at the St. Petersburg International Media Forum. Under her leadership, the demand for Russian films in the international media market surged significantly.
Personal Life
While her professional life has been highly successful, Mtsituridze's personal life has been more private. She married at a young age, but the relationship ended in divorce. She has kept the identity of her former spouse a secret and prefers to remain tight-lipped about her personal relationships. The film critic lives in Moscow with her mother, and her family life remains a mystery to her fans, even on her Instagram profile.
Present and Future Endeavors
As head of Roskino, Mtsituridze has spearheaded numerous successful projects. Ahead of the Cannes Film Festival, she stepped down as artistic director of the Russian Pavilion and became its supervising director as Roskino's general producer.
In 2017, under Mtsituridze's guidance, Russian cinema was brilliantly represented at the 70th Cannes Film Festival, where Andrey Zvyagintsev's film won the Jury Prize. At the Berlin International Film Festival in February 2017, Moscow was proposed as a filming location to world-renowned directors. With the support of the Ministry of Culture and the Moscow city government, Mtsituridze achieved what her predecessors had failed to do: establishing Moscow's presence at the film location stand.
At the 2017 Venice Film Festival, Mtsituridze continued to promote Moscow as a viable shooting destination for international films, opening up new opportunities for Russian cinema. In addition to her official duties, Mtsituridze remains an avid reader, enjoys learning French, and makes time for fitness whenever possible.
