Early Life and Childhood Struggles
Yekaterina Shavrina was born in 1948 in the village of Pyshma in the Sverdlovsk region of Russia. Her parents were Fyoctist Evstigneyevich, a driver, and Feodosia Evgenyevna, a homemaker. By the age of four, she still could not speak, but after a successful surgery, she began to sing and speak simultaneously. Tragedy struck when her parents passed away at a young age, leaving her responsible for the care of her five sisters and a brother.
Musical Pursuits and Career Beginnings
To support her family, Shavrina worked at various jobs, including cleaning at a cultural center and as a controller at a technical factory. At the age of 16, she joined the State Volga Folk Choir in Kuibyshev (now Samara). Her early experiences in healthcare led her to enroll in medical school, but she eventually dropped out due to her involvement in three amateur circles.
Arrival in Moscow and Training
Shavrina moved to Moscow and attended the All-Russian Creative Workshop for Variety Art, the Ippolitov-Ivanov School of Music, and the Russian Academy of Theatre Arts (GITIS). She credits Lyudmila Georgievna Zykina and composer Grigory Fedorovich Ponomarenko for her success on the big stage. Ponomarenko wrote some of her early songs and helped to launch her career.
Rise to Fame and Musical Style
Since 1964, Shavrina has been a member of Mosconcert. She has toured extensively throughout Russia and internationally, performing popular hits such as "I Love You, Russia," "Topolya," and "Kolyushka." She is known for her versatile repertoire, which includes traditional folk songs, contemporary pop music with Russian influences, and acapella performances.
Personal Life and Interests
Shavrina has two twin daughters, Zhanna and Ella, and a son, Grigory. She enjoys driving, construction, and outdoor activities like skiing and acrobatics. She is a non-smoker, non-drinker, and maintains an active lifestyle. Her hobbies include classical music, historical books, and animals.
Accolades and Recognition
Shavrina has received numerous awards and honors. She is a People's Artist of Russia (1995), Honored Artist of the RSFSR (1983), and a laureate of the Lenin Komsomol Prize and Moscow Komsomol Prize. She has honorary citizenship in 11 cities in Russia.
Inspirations and Admiration
Shavrina admires talented and hardworking individuals, including Lyudmila Zykina, Mstislav Rostropovich, Alfred Schnittke, Maya Plisetskaya, Frida Kahlo, and Mikhail Ulyanov.
