Early Life and Inheritance (836-840)
In 836, Ecchard inherited the family domain of Péracy from his father, Hildebrand III, Count of Autun. In 840, he received the Burgundian county of Morvois.
Conflict with King Charles II the Bald (858-859)
In 858, Ecchard joined forces with Count Odo I of Troyes and Archbishop Hincmar of Sens in a conflict with King Charles II the Bald of West Francia over the election of the Bishop of Langres. The dissatisfied nobles rebelled and sought aid from King Louis the German of East Francia, Charles's brother, who invaded Burgundy. In January 859, Charles managed to expel his brother and suppress the rebellion. Ecchard and Odo lost their counties.
Restoration and Expansion (863-872)
However, in 863, Ecchard was pardoned and received the county of Chalon. In 871, he further acquired the county of Mâcon and the southern part of Otênois. Around this time, Charolais and Brionnais were separated from Otênois, and Charolais became part of the county of Chalon. Ecchard had already possessed a large part of Charolais through his lordship of Péracy.
Count of Autun and Consolidation of Lands (872-877)
In the following year, Ecchard inherited Autun after the death of his brother Bernard, consolidating vast territories under his control. He died in 877 and was buried in the monastery of Fleury-sur-Loire in Nevers. His possessions passed to his nephew Boson of Vienne, the son of his second wife.
Marriages and Legacy
Ecchard was married twice: first to Albiguinde, and from 863/869 to Richilda, possibly the daughter of Richard II, Count of Amiens. It is not known whether he had any children.
