Early Life and Education
Elena Alexsanyan was born in Yerevan on December 18, 1933. She graduated from Yerevan State University's Philological Faculty in 1955 with a degree in Russian literature.
Career in Publishing and Academia
After graduating, Alexsanyan worked as an editor at Yerevan State University Press (1955-1957) and a literary staff member at the republican newspaper "Kommunist" (1957-1962). In 1963, she enrolled in the correspondence program at Yerevan State University and began an internship at the Gorky Institute of World Literature in Moscow.
In 1965, Alexsanyan defended her PhD thesis on the topic "Paustovsky as a Novelist." From 1963 to 1967, she was a senior lecturer at Yerevan State Pedagogical Institute. In 1967, she joined the M. Abegyan Institute of Literature as a senior researcher and later became head of the Department of Foreign Literature and Comparative Literary Studies.
Academic Achievements
In 1978, Alexsanyan completed her doctoral dissertation on "Armenian Realism and the Experience of Russian Literature." She received the title of Professor in 1984. In 2001-2007, she served as the head of the Department of Russian Literature at Yerevan State Pedagogical Institute.
Literary Activities and Membership
Since 1969, Alexsanyan has been a member of the Union of Writers of Armenia as a critic, literary scholar, and translator. She published her work in various Armenian and international journals, including "Druzhba Narodov," "Voprosy Literatury," and "Literary Armenia."
Personal Life
Elena Alexsanyan was married twice. Her first husband, Enne Meloyan (1929-1974), was an engineer, and her second husband, Akop Tonakanyan (1934-2004), was a geologist and ufologist. She had two children, Ashot (born 1959) and Zare (born 1970).
Legacy and Honors
Elena Alexsanyan has authored seven monographs and over 100 scientific articles. She mentored numerous students, guiding them towards successful academic careers. In 2003, she received the L. Mkrtchyan Prize and the Armenian-Russian University Award for her book "Armenia Lives in the Soul of the Mighty."
