Biography of Elena Chernyak (Mikhailova)
Acting CareerElena Chernyak, also known as Elena Mikhailova, is an actress who gained recognition for her performances in both theater and film. She received her acting education at the Shchukin School, where she was accepted on her first attempt despite the intense competition. Chernyak made her on-screen debut while still a student, playing the role of an arrow shooter in the film "Flights in Dreams and in Reality". After graduating from the Shchukin School, she joined the troupe of the Central Children's Theater, where she quickly rose to play leading roles. She continued to pursue her career in both theater and film, with one of her most notable roles being Ustyusha in the drama "Two Hussars".
A New Path
While working at the Central Children's Theater, Chernyak met Alexander Mikhailov, an actor known for his role in the film "The Formula of Love". They immediately felt a spiritual connection and soon got married. However, despite their professional success, they felt dissatisfied and conflicted with their double lives. Chernyak recalls the moment when they realized that their principles and actions were not aligned: "We work in the theater, we get paid for it, and we lead a double life. Our values are one thing, but we have to do something completely different. Lately, Sasha has been assigned roles of a murderer or a suicidal person. He refused once, twice, thrice, and then the administration started getting angry. And I also reached a critical point. In my latest work, when the choreographer started to create the dance moves, there were some movements that made me think – what if my husband comes to watch this, and how will I perform all of this? He would be ashamed of me."
A New Direction
Feeling unsatisfied with their lives, Chernyak and Mikhailov sought guidance from Father Ioann, who advised them to consider their abilities and possibilities before making any decisions. Inspired by his words, they started taking vocal and music lessons to prepare themselves for serving in the church. In 1987, they made the decision to leave the theater and pursue a new path. Their departure was met with mixed reactions from their surroundings. While some admired their courage, others considered them traitors. Nevertheless, Chernyak and Mikhailov felt a sense of freedom and joy in their new life.
Musical Journey
Chernyak and Mikhailov began their musical journey by becoming choir singers in a church in the village of Grebnevo, near Moscow. Later, they started performing together as a duet, singing spiritual songs. They performed in hospitals, orphanages, nursing homes, prisons, and numerous churches. Their music, which is dedicated to their love for God and their homeland, features lyrics written by famous poets such as Sergei Yesenin, Vladimir Trediakovski, and Nikolai Gumilev, as well as religious figures. In 1995, they released their first album, "Glory to God for Everything!", followed by several more albums.
Continued Artistic Pursuits
In addition to their musical career, Chernyak and Mikhailov also ventured into theater once again. They started directing and producing plays that aligned with their spiritual beliefs and values. Their first production was an adaptation of the fairy tale "The Lost Conscience" by Mikhail Saltykov-Shchedrin. They continued to stage more plays, including "Matryonin Dvor" based on a story by Alexander Solzhenitsyn. Their theatrical productions gained popularity and were well-received by audiences.
Education and Recognition
In 1997, Chernyak and Mikhailov graduated from the Orthodox St. Tikhon's Theological Institute. Chernyak earned a degree in religious studies, while Mikhailov received a degree in arts. Their dedication to their craft and their spiritual journey has earned them recognition and the support of the Russian Orthodox Church. They continue to inspire audiences with their music and theatrical performances, spreading messages of faith, morality, and the importance of conscience.
