Elena Novikova: From Theater to Stand-Up Stardom
The BeginningElena Novikova, renowned as Russia's "most mature" comedian on television, was born on January 3, 1970, in Donetsk, Ukraine. At the age of 17, she left home to pursue her creative dreams in Moscow. In 1993, she graduated from the Acting Department of the Moscow Art Theater's School-Studio.
Theater and Film Career
Novikova made her acting debut in the short film "The Seagull" (1989). She went on to work at the Moscow Drama Theater named after Alexander Pushkin from 1998 to 2004, where she played memorable roles in productions such as "Terrorists" and "Candid Polaroid Snapshots." She also appeared in several television shows and films, including "March of the Turkish" and "The Wedding."
Directing and Teaching
In 2005, Novikova directed her first play, "Galka Motalko," based on a play by Natalia Vorozhbit. Despite its lukewarm reception by critics, the play marked Novikova's foray into directing. She also taught at the Moscow Art Theater's School-Studio.
Stand-Up Breakthrough
In 2015, Novikova co-founded "Stand Up TsIMmerman," a hybrid of theater and comedy club. This platform helped her hone her comedic skills. In 2017, she auditioned for the first season of the TV show "Open Microphone" and emerged victorious.
"Stand Up" on TNT
Her success in "Open Microphone" earned Novikova a spot in the regular lineup of the popular comedy show "Stand Up" on TNT. At 47 years old, she became the "most mature" comedian on the show. Her monologues often explore themes of aging, child-rearing, and the realities of life.
