Early Life and Education
Georgiy Pavlovich Golts was born on February 22 (March 6), 1893, in Moscow, the son of a mechanic at the Bolshevskaya Manufactory. After graduating from the 9th Moscow Gymnasium, he took painting lessons from P.I. Kelin. In 1913, he enrolled in the painting department of the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture but switched to the architecture department in 1914. He continued his studies at the Moscow VKHUTEMAS from 1919 to 1922, with a brief interruption for military service in the Red Army from 1920 to 1921.
Architectural Career
Golts graduated with a diploma project entitled "Garden City in Ostankino" and soon after embarked on a trip to Italy (1924). He became a member of the Moscow Architectural Society (MAO) in 1926. From 1934, he taught and headed the Department of Design at the Institute of Postgraduate Studies of the USSR Academy of Architecture. In 1935, he became the head of the Moscow City Council workshop. In 1939, he was elected a full member of the USSR Academy of Architecture.
Theatrical Design
In addition to his architectural work, Golts was also a prolific theatrical designer. He created sets for productions at the Moscow Children's Theater and theaters in Belarus.
Personal Life
Golts was married to Galina Nikolaevna Golts (Shcheglova), a former dancer at the I.S. Chernetskaya School-Studio. They had a daughter, Nika Georgievna Golts (1925-2012), who became an artist and illustrator of children's books.
Awards and Honors
Golts received the Stalin Prize of the second degree in 1941 for his architectural designs for a residential building on Bolshaya Kaluzhskaya Street in Moscow (1940).
Legacy
Georgiy Pavlovich Golts passed away on May 27, 1946, and was buried in the Novodevichy Cemetery in Moscow. His contributions to both architecture and theatrical design continue to be recognized in the field.
