Elena Popova, a British artist of Russian descent, was born in 1978 in the closed Soviet city of Ozersk, where nuclear research was conducted. This formative experience would later influence her artistic practice. In 2000, she graduated from the School-Studio of the Moscow Art Theatre (MKhAT) in scenic design. In 2011, she completed her MA in painting from the Royal College of Art (RCA) in London.
