His artistic education began in 1974 when he enrolled in the University of Graz, where he pursued Art History. From 1977 to 1979, he studied Sculpture at the College of Arts and Crafts in Salzburg. His artistic journey continued at the College of Applied Arts in Vienna, where he honed his skills in sculpture from 1979 to 1981.

Wurm's reputation as an established artist was solidified by his appointment as a visiting professor of sculpture at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1995. In 1996 and 1997, he held a professorship at the College of Industrial and Artistic Design in Linz. Additionally, Wurm served on the board of directors of Vienna Secession from 1993 to 1999, and as its vice-president from 1995 onward.
