Early Life and Education

Elena Sergeyevna Zynkevych was born on November 9, 1940, in Sverdlovsk (now Yekaterinburg). Her mother, Ekaterina Viktorovna Mayburova, was an art historian and professor at the Kyiv Conservatory. In 1953, the family moved to Kyiv, where Zynkevych completed her piano studies at Children's Music School No. 3 and later graduated from the R. Glier Kyiv Music School (1961) and the Kyiv State Conservatory (1966). She also took private organ lessons and pursued graduate studies at the Kyiv Conservatory, earning her doctorate in 1986.

Academic Career

Since 1970, Zynkevych has taught at the Kyiv Conservatory (now the National Music Academy of Ukraine named after P. I. Tchaikovsky). She became an associate professor in 1976 and a full professor in 1989. She currently chairs the Department of the History of Music of the Peoples of Ukraine and Music Criticism.

Research and Publications

Zynkevych is a renowned musicologist with broad research interests, spanning from ancient music to postmodernism. Her work explores theoretical issues of music history, interdisciplinary connections between music and other art forms, the development of Ukrainian symphonies, intercultural influences, and contemporary music. She has authored numerous books, textbooks, and over 200 articles in scholarly journals and specialized publications.

Public Service

Beyond her academic pursuits, Zynkevych is an active public figure. She is a member of the International Musicological Society, the National Union of Composers of Ukraine, and the Association of New Music. She has received several prestigious awards, including the Ministry of Higher and Secondary Special Education of Ukraine Prize, the "Suchasnist" Magazine Prize, and the N. V. Lysenko Prize.

Legacy

Zynkevych's contributions to musicology and music education have left an enduring impact on Ukrainian musical scholarship and practice. The department she leads is the first in Ukraine to specialize in the musical culture of Ukraine's ethnic groups and music criticism. Her students have gone on to successful careers in music criticism, regularly publishing in various periodicals.
