Early Life and Training

Eleni Gedevanishvili, a Georgian figure skater, was born into a world of ice and athletics. At the tender age of 5, she embarked on her skating journey under the tutelage of Tamara Andzhaparidze. Her exceptional talent became apparent by the age of 10, prompting the Georgian Figure Skating Federation to recommend that her family relocate to Moscow for advanced training opportunities.

Move to Moscow and Breakthrough

In 2000, Eleni and her mother settled in Moscow, where she joined the renowned CSKA Skating Club under the guidance of coach Elena Buyanova and choreographer Elena Blagova. In 2003, she achieved a significant milestone by becoming the Georgian National Champion in the singles event.

International Debut and Success

Eleni made her international debut in 2006 at the European Championships in Lyon, France. She caused a sensation by landing a complex triple flip-triple toe loop combination in the short program, securing a remarkable fourth-place finish. She went on to finish fifth overall, an impressive result for a debutante. Her success continued with a 10th-place finish at the Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy, and a 14th-place finish at the World Championships in Calgary, Canada.

Diplomatic Challenges and Return to Georgia

The 2006/07 season brought unexpected adversity. Amidst strained diplomatic relations between Russia and Georgia, Eleni's mother was deported from Russia for violating visa regulations. Eleni was forced to return to Georgia, leaving her training in Moscow.

In recognition of her athletic achievements, President Mikheil Saakashvili bestowed upon Eleni the Order of Honor, Georgia's highest sporting accolade, making her the youngest recipient of the award. However, without adequate training facilities in Georgia, Eleni sought to return to Moscow. Her mother's visa violation prevented her from doing so, and Eleni refused to live in Moscow without her.

US-Based Training and Olympic Berth

In 2006, the Georgian government provided Eleni with significant support to train and reside in the United States. She worked with Galina Zmievskaya at the Russian Figure Skating School in New Jersey. Despite missing significant tournaments and experiencing inconsistent form in the 2006/07 season, Eleni regained her momentum and earned a berth at the 2008 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Canada.

Continued Journey and Legacy

Eleni's skating career faced further challenges in the 2007/08 season. She trained under Roman Serov in Hackensack, New Jersey, but her results remained unremarkable. In 2010 and 2012, she became the first and only Georgian figure skater to win medals at the European Championships, earning bronze both times. Eleni retired from competitive skating in 2014, leaving behind a legacy as one of Georgia's most successful athletes and inspiring future generations of skaters.
