Henri-Charles-Alfred Delaborde
Early Life and InfluencesHenri-Charles-Alfred Delaborde was born in Paris, France, the illegitimate son of the composer and pianist Charles-Valentin Alkan. He inherited his musical talent from his father, who became his first teacher. Additionally, Delaborde studied under renowned pianists Ignaz Moscheles and Adolf von Henselt, honing his skills at an early age.
Career and Accomplishments
Delaborde embarked on a successful concert career, touring extensively throughout Europe. His performances in St. Petersburg, Russia, were particularly lauded. He also excelled as a composer, writing numerous works for piano solo, as well as an opera entitled "Maître Martin." In collaboration with Isidor Philipp, Delaborde prepared the first edition of his father's collected works, published in 1900.
A Passion for Birds
Beyond his musical pursuits, Delaborde was an avid ornithologist. He possessed a renowned collection of birds, reportedly owning 121 parrots. The imitation of bird calls in the Third Piano Concerto by Camille Saint-Saëns, dedicated to Delaborde, is a testament to his fascination with these creatures.
Pedagogical Legacy
As a professor at the Paris Conservatory, Delaborde taught a generation of talented pianists, including the acclaimed Olga Samaroff. His influence on the art of piano playing continues to be felt through his students and the countless others inspired by his teachings.
Later Life and Legacy
In his later years, Delaborde was laid to rest in the prestigious Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris. He is remembered as a gifted pianist, composer, and ornithologist whose contributions to the musical world endure to this day.
