Elizabeth Baume-Schneider is a member of the Swiss Federal Council since January 2023. She represents the Social Democratic Party of Switzerland (SP) and serves as the Head of the Federal Department of Justice and Police since January 1, 2023.
Early Life and Education
Baume-Schneider was born on Christmas Day 1963 to a German-speaking farming family in the French-speaking canton of Bern. She attended a French-language school and later enrolled in the University of Neuchâtel to study Economics and Social Sciences. She graduated with a license in 1987.
Political Activism
Baume-Schneider has always held leftist views. She joined the Swiss Revolutionary Marxist League as a teenager and was involved in Amnesty International, inspired by the Polish Solidarity movement. Her political convictions led her to join the SP.

In 1995, Baume-Schneider was elected to the cantonal government of Jura, where she served until 2019. She then became a member of the National Council of Switzerland, representing the canton of Jura.

In November 2022, Baume-Schneider announced her candidacy for the Swiss Federal Council. Despite being considered an outsider, she was elected to the council in December 2022 on the third ballot. Baume-Schneider became the first representative from the canton of Jura to serve on the Federal Council.
