John Montagu: The 4th Earl of Sandwich

John Montagu, also known as the 4th Earl of Sandwich, was a renowned English political figure and held various military and political positions throughout his life. He served as the Minister of Postal Services, the First Lord of the Admiralty, and was an advisor to the monarch. However, he is best known for being the person who "invented" the sandwich.

Early Life and Career

John Montagu was born on November 3, 1718. He received his education at Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge before embarking on a journey. In 1739, Montagu became a member of the House of Lords as a follower of the Duke of Bedford. He was soon appointed one of the special commissioners of the Admiralty under Bedford's leadership and attained the rank of colonel.

In 1746, he attended the Congress of Breda in the Netherlands as a special envoy and took part in negotiations for the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle, which was signed in 1748. In February of the same year, John became the First Lord of the Admiralty, a position he held until June 1751. In August 1753, he became one of the leading figures in the Secretaries of State.

Military and Political Positions

Throughout his life, John Montagu held various military and political positions. In 1768, he was appointed as the Minister of Postal Services. In 1770, he became the Secretary of State, and from 1771 to March 1782, he served as the First Lord of the Admiralty. However, it is known today that his work in this field was not flawless.

Personal Life

John Montagu was married twice. His first wife was Dorothy Fane, daughter of Viscount Fane the First. However, their marriage was short-lived due to Dorothy's serious health problems. Martha Ray, a talented opera singer, became John's second companion in life. They spent 16 happy years together and had several children, including Basil Montagu, who would become a writer, lawyer, and philanthropist.

Tragedy struck in April 1779 when Martha was murdered by one of the detractors of their family happiness, James Hackman, the rector of Wiveton, in the foyer of the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden. After this incident, the Earl of Sandwich never remarried.

The Invention of the Sandwich

As mentioned earlier, the beloved sandwich that we enjoy today may have been named after the 4th Earl of Sandwich. During gambling sessions, at John Montagu's request, bread with meat wrapped in it was served on the table, which served as a prototype for the modern sandwich.

Support for Captain Cook

John Montagu actively supported Captain Cook in his expeditions. In 1778, when Cook discovered Hawaii, he named them the Sandwich Islands in honor of the 4th Earl of Sandwich.
