Early Life and Family
Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon was born on August 4, 1900, as the ninth child of Claude George Bowes-Lyon, Lord Glamis, and Cecilia Nina Cavendish-Bentinck. She grew up with her siblings at the family estate in Hertfordshire and Glamis Castle in Scotland. Elizabeth's education was primarily handled by governesses, with a particular focus on German and Bible studies.
Marriage to King George VI
In 1923, Elizabeth married Prince Albert, second son of King George V, who became King George VI upon his brother's abdication in 1936. The couple had two daughters: Elizabeth (later Queen Elizabeth II) and Margaret.
Service During World War II
During World War II, Elizabeth and George remained in London despite the threat of air raids, becoming symbols of resistance against Nazi Germany. Elizabeth's resilience inspired the nation, as she famously declared, "The little princesses will never leave without me, I will never leave the King, and the King will never leave England."
Post-War Years and Widowhood
After the war, the monarchy regained popularity, despite the scandal surrounding Edward VIII's abdication. However, tragedy struck in 1952 when King George VI died prematurely from cancer. Elizabeth became Queen Mother and moved to Scotland, where she dedicated herself to restoring the historic Mey Castle.
Later Life and Legacy
Despite her advanced age, Elizabeth remained active in public life, attending charity events and supporting various organizations. Her 100th birthday in 2000 was a national celebration. Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, Queen Mother, passed away on March 30, 2002, leaving an indelible mark on British history and society. She was widely respected and affectionately known as the "Queen Mum."
