Elizabeth of Romania, Queen Consort of Greece

Birth and Marriage

Elizabeth, a Romanian princess, was born in 1904 at Peleș Castle to King Ferdinand I and Queen Marie. On February 27, 1921, she married Prince Georgios (later King George II of Greece) in Bucharest.

Reign and Exile

As Queen Consort to George II, Elizabeth reigned from 1922 to 1923. However, following the overthrow of the monarchy in 1923, the couple went into exile together.

Divorce and Return to Romania

The marriage proved unsuccessful, and the couple divorced on July 6, 1935. After George II's restoration to the Greek throne later that year, Elizabeth returned to Romania.

Later Years and Relationships

Elizabeth lived in Romania until World War II, which brought down the Romanian monarchy. She had several romantic relationships, including an affair with Frank Rattigan (father of playwright Terence Rattigan) that led to his dismissal from the diplomatic service.
