Early Life and Career

Childhood and Education

Born in 1889 in Waldkeim, East Prussia, the German communist Else Stahn worked as a domestic servant after completing her schooling in 1904.

Political Activism

Her political journey began in 1916 with her membership in the Social Democratic Party (SPD). She later joined the Independent Social Democratic Party of Germany (USPD) in 1919 and finally the Communist Party of Germany (KPD) in 1921.

Political Leadership

Local Office

In 1923, Stahn became the head of the ADGB trade union chapter in Legerdorf. From 1924 to 1931, she served as the head of the KPD there. She also represented the KPD in the Steinburg county council in 1929-1930.

Reichstag Deputy

In September 1930, she was elected as a KPD deputy to the Reichstag.
Resistance and Suppression
Preparation for Underground Work

In 1931-32, Stahn underwent political training in the USSR. She prepared for underground activity in anticipation of a potential ban on the KPD by the Nazis.

Arrest and Imprisonment

After the Nazi ban on the KPD in 1933, Stahn was arrested in May and September on charges of treason. However, she was acquitted in January 1934. She returned to Legerdorf only to be arrested again and sent to the Ravensbrück women's concentration camp in September 1939.

Death and Legacy

Due to severe illness, Stahn was released from the camp in December. She died in Legerdorf in March 1940, remembered for her courageous resistance against the Nazi regime.
