Eliud Kipchoge: A Legendary Kenyan Marathoner

Born in the Rift Valley village of Kapsisiywa, Kenya, Eliud Kipchoge was raised by his single mother, a schoolteacher. From a young age, he showed exceptional running abilities.

Meeting His Mentor

At 16, Kipchoge crossed paths with Patrick Sang, a renowned runner who became his coach in 2015. Sang, a native of the same village, had won Olympic and World Championship medals.

Breaking Records

In 2013, Kipchoge made his marathon debut in Hamburg, setting a course record. He followed this up with a second-place finish in Berlin and victories in Rotterdam and Chicago.

In 2015, he triumphed in London and Berlin, setting personal bests in both races. The following year, he defended his London title with a record-breaking performance, and won Olympic gold in Rio de Janeiro.

Official World Record

On September 16, 2018, Kipchoge shattered the world record at the Berlin Marathon, running 2 hours, 1 minute, and 39 seconds. This surpassed the previous record by an astonishing 1 minute and 18 seconds.

Unofficial Record

In 2017, as part of Nike's Breaking2 project, Kipchoge ran an unofficial sub-two-hour marathon in Monza, Italy. However, this result was not recognized as a world record due to the race being a timed trial with support from rotating pacesetters.

Tokyo Olympics

In 2021, Kipchoge claimed a second Olympic gold medal at the Tokyo Games, finishing with a time of 2 hours, 8 minutes, and 38 seconds.

Family and Personal Life

Eliud Kipchoge is married and has three children. He resides in Eldoret, Kenya, and is deeply involved in community affairs.
