The Youngest Entrepreneurs in Britain - Elizabeth and Rebecca Appleyard

Elizabeth and Rebecca Appleyard

Elizabeth and Rebecca Appleyard, British sisters, have been dubbed the Youngest Entrepreneurs in Britain. They have embarked on a rather clever business venture - buying toys and sweets online and reselling them, thus providing themselves with pocket money. Elizabeth Appleyard, aged 7, and her younger sister Rebecca, aged 4, live in Sittingbourne, Kent, along with their mother Rachel and their father Peter Appleyard.

A Business for Education

Their mother, Rachel, recalls asking Elizabeth why she decided to earn her own money, to which the young girl wisely replied - for education. With their parents' permission, the sisters started their own simple 'buy-sell' business. Rachel, a 34-year-old mother, takes great pride in her daughters' project and shares that Elizabeth, the older of the two sisters, had long been interested in how to earn money independently and start her own business. Rachel emphasizes that Elizabeth's interest was not childlike at all. Peter, the 36-year-old father, adds that Elizabeth always wanted to grow up and become a scientist but realized early on that it would be a long and expensive journey. Therefore, she decided to create her own educational fund.

A Clever Scheme

Currently, Elizabeth focuses on toys, while little Rebecca takes care of the sweets. They buy toys and sweets in bulk from online stores and then sell them in their own town. The scheme is as simple as it is effective, essentially mirroring the workings of the global business world. While their peers play with dolls and pretend to run a shop, Elizabeth and Rebecca are truly engaged in their own doll and shop business, with profits. The girls earn around £120 every two weeks, which is quite impressive considering their young age.

To make their earnings, the girls have to put in some effort. Besides purchasing items wholesale, they also have to hang and package the sweets. To secure initial investments from their father and grandfather, Elizabeth created a well-structured business plan. Rachel mentions that it is amusing to see her little girls sitting at the computer, surrounded by a calculator and papers, but for them, it is not mere play - it is serious business. The sisters are determined not to spend their profits but rather reinvest them in new projects - they have learned firsthand that money makes money. Today, Elizabeth and Rebecca Appleyard are considered the youngest entrepreneurs in Britain.
