Early Life and Marriage

Elizabeth Cavendish, an accomplished British novelist and close friend of Georgiana Cavendish, Duchess of Devonshire, was born Elizabeth Hervey on May 13, 1759, in Horringer, Suffolk, England. Her father was Frederick Hervey, 4th Earl of Bristol, and her family affectionately called her "Bess." In 1776, she married John Thomas Foster, an Irish politician and her first cousin. They had three children before their unhappy marriage dissolved in 1781.

Friendship with the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire

After her separation, Elizabeth met the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire in Bath in 1782. She quickly became Georgiana's confidante and embarked on an affair with the Duke, who was also experiencing marital difficulties. The trio formed an unconventional love triangle that lasted for nearly 25 years. Elizabeth had two children with the Duke, Caroline St. Jules and Augustus Clifford.

Marriage to the Duke

With the Duke's blessing, Elizabeth married him after Georgiana's death in 1806. She retained the title of Duchess of Devonshire until her own death in 1824 at the age of 64.

Literary Pursuits

Alongside her social life, Elizabeth was an accomplished author. She published seven novels, including "Melissa and Marcia, or the Sisters" and "Amabel; or, Memoirs of a Woman of Fashion." Her final novel, "Amabel," was the only one published under her own name.

Relationships and Legacy

Elizabeth's numerous romantic liaisons included Ercole Consalvi, John Sackville, Duke of Dorset, and Valentine Richard Quin, Earl of Dunraven. Quin is believed to have fathered her son, Frederic Hervey Foster Quin, who became a renowned physician. Elizabeth was also a close friend of the French writer Madame de Staël and a great-great-great-grandmother of Anna Wintour, editor-in-chief of Vogue magazine.
