Early Life and Education
Ellen Baker was born into a medical family in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Her mother, Claire K. Shulman, was a physician and politician, serving as the first woman President of the Queens Borough in New York City. Baker pursued her undergraduate studies at the State University of New York at Buffalo, earning a Bachelor's degree in Geology in 1974. She then obtained her medical degree from Cornell University in 1978 and a Master's degree in Public Health from the University of Texas School of Public Health in 1994.
NASA Career
Baker joined NASA in 1981 and became an astronaut candidate in 1985. She currently serves as the Chief of the Astronaut Office Education/Medical Branch.
Spaceflights
Baker became the 220th person in space, the 131st U.S. astronaut, and the 11th woman to make an orbital spaceflight when she boarded the Space Shuttle Atlantis on STS-34 in 1989. She also flew on the Space Shuttle Columbia during STS-50 in 1992 and the Space Shuttle Atlantis during STS-71 in 1995.
Filmography
Baker made a cameo appearance in the 2005 film "The Wild Blue Yonder."
