Ellie Goulding is an English pop singer, guitarist, and songwriter. She gained fame after winning first place on BBC Sound in 2010 and receiving the Critics' Choice Award in the same year.

Early Life and Education

Ellie was born in Hereford, England. After completing school in Kingston, Herefordshire, she first attended college and then university. She learned to play the guitar and write her own folk songs at the age of fifteen. During her time at the University of Kent, she studied drama and developed a serious interest in electronic music.

Music Career

Ellie started her music career with the help of Vincent "Frankmusik" Frank, who later released her track "Wish I Stayed," and Finlay "Starsmith" Dow-Smith, who became her main collaborator for her debut album. After two years of studying, Ellie took a year off from university, with the agreement of her professors, and moved to West London. In September 2009, she signed a contract with Polydor Records, although her debut single, "Under the Sheets," was released under the independent label Neon Gold Records. The song received positive feedback and was frequently played on BBC Radio 1. It reached number 53 on the American singles chart.

Rise to Fame

In October 2009, Ellie went on a concert tour in the UK to support Victoria "Little Boots" Hesketh. In December 2009, her collaboration with Vincent Frank, "Wish I Stayed," was released on iTunes. Around the same time, Ellie participated in a remix by Starsmith. Her true fame came when she won the BBC Sound poll in 2010. This poll gathered the opinions of critics, radio station employees, and music industry professionals to select the most talented young artists.
