Her parents, Sabir and Nasrin Ateshin, were Iranian Azerbaijanis who had returned to Iran from Soviet Azerbaijan shortly before her birth. With a beautiful voice, Googoosh started performing on stage with her father at a young age. She began acting in films at the age of 7.

In the 1970s, Googoosh became one of the most popular singers and actresses in Iran. She also gained recognition in Turkey, the Caucasus, the United States, and Central Asia. She became known in the USSR thanks to the film "The Long Night."

Googoosh is fluent in Azerbaijani and Persian languages and sings songs in Persian, Azerbaijani, Armenian, English, Italian, Spanish, and French. In Iran, she became a symbol of modernity and gained immense popularity. However, after the Islamic Revolution in 1979, she was banned from performing in Iran.

In 2000, Googoosh relocated to North America, specifically Los Angeles, where she continues her artistic career. In 2002, her song "Gharibi-ashena" was recognized by the BBC as the most popular song in the Middle East.

One of Googoosh's most popular songs in her native Azerbaijani language is "Ayrılıq" (English: "Separation"), which she recorded and performed for the first time in Baku in 1972 during a solo concert. Since then, she has included this song in almost all of her solo performances, making it her signature piece, along with many others.

Googoosh has been married four times and has a son named Kambiz from her first marriage.
