Early Life and Career Beginnings
Elmarie Louise Wendel, born November 23, 1928, in Howard County, Iowa, was one of five siblings in a musical family. Growing up, she traveled the country, performing in various local concert halls, including the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville. This experience laid the foundation for her acting career.
Broadway and Off-Broadway Success
Wendel made her way to New York City, where she performed in Broadway and off-Broadway productions. Notable roles include "Wonderful Town," "Little Mary Sunshine," "Gigi," and Cole Porter's "Revisited."
Transition to Film and Television
Joining the national touring company of "Annie," Wendel ultimately landed in Los Angeles, seamlessly transitioning from stage to screen. In addition to her iconic role as Mamie Dubcek in "3rd Rock from the Sun," Wendel appeared in numerous TV shows, including "Seinfeld," "Love & War," and "Murder, She Wrote."
Notable Roles in Film
Wendel lent her distinctive voice to the character of Aunt Grizelda in the animated film "Dr. Seuss' The Lorax," and also appears in the 2015 video game "Fallout 4." She played significant roles in the telefilm "And the Band Played On" and Meiert Avis' independent thriller "Far from Home."
Later Work and Legacy
In the sitcom "George Lopez," Wendel portrayed Gina, an assembly line worker at an aircraft factory. Her final television appearance was in the series "Exes," alongside her "3rd Rock from the Sun" co-star, Kristen Johnston.
Elmarie Wendel passed away on July 21, 2018, at the age of 89. Her daughter, actress JC Wendel, confirmed the news on Instagram, describing her as a "wonderful mother and a fabulous lady." Co-star Jim Beaver expressed his condolences, saying, "Elmarie was a firecracker, funny, charming, and awfully, awfully sweet."
