Early Life and Education

Elmira Suleymanova, the first ombudsman of Azerbaijan, was born in 1937. In 1959, she graduated from the Azerbaijan State University.

Career

Scientific Achievements

Suleymanova began her career at the Institute of Petrochemical Processes of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences in 1959. She obtained her doctorate in chemical sciences in 1980 and became a professor in 1982. She was a member of the New York Academy of Sciences since 1997 and authored over 200 scientific works in the field of petrochemistry.

Women's Rights Advocate

In the 1980s, Suleymanova became actively involved in the women's movement. In 1994, she founded the scientific-practical center "Woman and Development," which has a consultative status with the UN Economic and Social Council. In 1998, she was recognized as one of the "100 Women Heroes of the World" by the Rochester University for her contributions to women's rights.

International Contributions

Suleymanova participated in several special sessions of the UN General Assembly, delivering speeches on human rights issues. She also established the "From Child to Child" children's peacemaking network. In 2001, she initiated the creation of the first resource center for elderly women in Azerbaijan.

Ombudsman Tenure

On July 2, 2002, Suleymanova was elected as the first ombudsman of Azerbaijan. She was re-elected for a second term in March 2010. She became a member of the International Institute of Ombudsmen and the European Institute of Ombudsmen in 2003. She held the position of ombudsman until 2019.

Legacy

Elmira Suleymanova passed away on April 25, 2024, due to a prolonged illness. She is buried in the Alley of Honor in Baku. Her legacy as a scientist, women's rights advocate, and ombudsman continues to inspire generations.
